Thanks to Instagram, it is no longer a secret that El Fenn is one of the most photogenic hotels in the world. Hidden deep within the old medina in Marrakech, one stumbles upon the unassuming entrance after wandering down a side alley. Immediately upon entering the riad, you feel a sense of calm, peace, and seclusion from the chaos that is Marrakech.
Back in 2002, El Fenn’s now owner, Vanessa Branson, was searching for a vacation home when she came across the perfectly imperfect skeleton of what was once a grande private residence in the medina. In the years that followed, Branson acquired over nine other neighboring homes, connecting and transforming them into what we see today. In 2014, the boutique hotel received the prestigious Mr & Mrs Smith award for Best Dressed Hotel beating out 950 other resorts.
The property is home to 28 individually styled rooms, three pools, two resident tortoises, a spa, roof-top restaurant, cocktail bar-meets-gift shop, a library, and countless cozy courtyards. Each room promises a memorable stay with specialty amenities like claw-foot bathtubs in the middle of your room, a private plunge pool to use at your leisure, or your very own terrace with a secret entrance behind the spa.
True to moroccan style, there is a sense of openness connecting the labyrinth of different rooms and floors that truly makes it feel like a home away from home. With no locks on the doors, an absence of window treatments, and showers sans curtains, this is a hotel for the open-minded and social traveler.
If you seek inspiring interiors, abundant art, captivating cultures, and colorful cuisine (don’t we all?) El Fenn is the perfect place to unwind after a day spent successfully navigating the souks and bartering for souvenirs. El Fenn’s promise to their guests is that no two stays are the same. With the interiors constantly in flux and the art gallery- that is, the hallways- eternally rotating, you can rest assured that they’ll keep their promise.
